Preparation of technetium-99m (Tc-99m) isotope generators for use in hospital nuclear medicine departments. Here, workers at Amersham International are finishing the assembly of Amertec II generators. At this stage, the generators contain no radioactive material. The gloveboxes & glass exist to protect the generators from microbiological contamination rather than as radiation shields. Tc-99m is short lived (its radioactive decay rate,or half- life,is 6 hours),so a generator containing its parent isotope,molybdenum-99 (a fission product of a nuclear reactor) is provided as a continuous, yet short-term source | |
