Oskarshamn nuclear reactor. This is one of the three nuclear reactors at the Oskarshamn site in Sweden. All three are boiling water reactors (BWR). The heat of the reactor core (from nuclear reactions) is directly used to boil water. The steam is then used to drive a turbine and generate electricity. BWR reactors are relatively cheap and simple to construct. The first Oskarshamn reactor (O1) came online in 1972. The other two began generating in 1974 (O2) and 1985 (O3). The Oskarshamn reactors produce over 2000 MW (megawatts) of electrical power. About half of Sweden's electrical power is generated by nuclear power stations | |
