The top of the core of the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) nuclear reactor. This photograph was taken during construction, before machinery and structures were fitted above the core. In the centre of the frame is the core itself, containing 82 fuel rods and 9 control rod positions. The three groups of holes in the floor are temporary storage positions for fuel rods. These allow easy transfer to and from the core, whilst remaining outside of the neutron field. FFTF is a sodium- cooled reactor which is used for testing fuels and components under operational conditions | |
