Nuclear winter. Image 4 of 5. Artwork of the Earth after a nuclear war. The amount of dust thrown up by the explosions has completely blacked out the northern hemisphere. The North Pole (top) remains uncovered by dust. Dark swirls of dust and smoke are seen moving into the southern hemisphere over South America. Dust and smoke from explosions and fires would block some of the Sun's heat and light, leading to a "nuclear winter". This could cause lowering of global temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Celsius, which would kill countless animals and plants, and also humans and their crops.
