Tibbets was the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay which dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Sweeney was the pilot of the B-29 Bockscar which dropped the second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. The man at right is Captain James Van Pelt,navigator for the Nagasaki mission.
