Solar water heaters on building rooftops at lower centre. Each heater comprises 2-4 rectangular flat plate collectors (dark grey) and a cylindrical water storage tank (green). Inside the collectors,a series of tubes pass over a black absorber plate. This absorbs sunlight and warms water in the tubes. The heated water rises to the storage tanks by convection, and cooler water sinks down into the collector. This system is known as a thermosiphon solar water heater. It harnesses the renewable energy of the sun,is relatively cheap to install and maintain, and produces no waste products.
