Traditional windmills. View of a row of traditional windmills. Windmills were traditionally used for performing heavy work such as pumping water to drain land or grinding cereal grain to make flour. The large sails drove the rotation of the machinery inside through a series of cogs. One of the skills of the miller was the adjustment of the blades so that the mill ran at a fairly constant rate. The ruin of a castle can also be seen at lower right. Photographed in the province of La Mancha,Spain | |
