Aswan High Dam,Egypt. This view looks north from the dam (across bottom) along the River Nile. The dam (built from 1960-1970) blocked the River Nile, creating Lake Nasser to the south. The flow of the Nile, including the yearly flood, can be regulated and water stored for use in times of drought. The dam is also used to generate electrical power (2.1 gigawatts [GW]) that is distributed along wires supported by the pylons at left and right. The dam (only part of which is seen here) is 3600 metres long,40 metres wide at its crest, and 111 metres tall. Photographed in April 2003 | |
