Hoover Dam. Hydroelectric power station at the base of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River,Nevada,USA. The U-shaped power station (centre) contains seventeen main turbines which convert the energy in falling water into electricity. The power station has a capacity of 2000 megawatts of electricity. The dam (bottom) is a concrete arch-gravity type,meaning that the water load is carried by both gravity action and horizontal arch action. It contains two and a half million cubic metres of concrete.
