Wood chips. A pile of wood chips made from copp- iced poplar trees. Fuelwood made from coppiced trees is a renewable source of energy. The chips are burnt in special furnaces that heat air or water for indoor heating. Unlike fossil fuel burn- ing, this process does not contribute to global warming because the amount of carbon dioxide re- leased by burning the wood is the same as that ab- sorbed by the growing poplar trees. Coppicing involves periodically harvesting wood by cutting the coppice trees to near ground level, which results in regeneration of numerous, thin, woody stems. The technique is based on an ancient form of woodland management. Photographed in Avon,UK | |
