Oil pipeline. Construction of an oil pipeline through a 'protected' area of cloud forest. At far left is a sign for the Mindo-Nambillo Bosque Protector (forest reserve),through which the pipeline was laid. The Oleoducto Crudo Pesado pipeline, completed in October 2003,transports between 390,000 and 450,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Ecuadorian Amazonian to Esmeraldas on the coast. The project met with opposition from environmentalists because of the damage caused to the cloud forest during construction of the pipeline, the threat of future exploitation of the Amazon region for oil,and the risk of pollution | |
