Oil refinery. Technician working on a tower at an oil refinery. In oil refineries, crude oil is heated and passed through catalytic cracking towers to break up its large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller fragments. The resulting components,or fractions, ranging from heavy industrial tars through to light fuels, such as petrol or kerosene, and gases, are separated out. The fractions may then be further processed.
