Oil extraction and energy distribution. An oil- extraction jack pump seen against a backdrop of electricity pylons. The jack pump, also called a 'nodding donkey',is used in oil wells where there is little natural pressure in the oil reservoir. It uses a system of non-return valves to draw the oil out as the head (right side) nods up and down. Jack pumps are seen less frequently in many oil producing areas as new recovery techniques are applied. Photograph taken at Bakersfield,California USA | |
