Artemis satellite. Illustration of the Artemis communications satellite receiving data from Europe and relaying it to Tenerife,an island in the Atlantic. Artemis receives the data by microwave transmission and relays it by a laser link (red). The Semiconductor Laser Intersatellite Link Experiment (SILEX) on Artemis uses a near- infrared laser to exchange data between satellites in orbit. Each terminal consists of a 25-cm telescope with a silicon avalanche photodiode for reception. Artemis is due for launch in 1997 | |
