Iridium satellite orbital network. Artwork depicting the orbits of the Iridium satellite constellation. These satellites will support the proposed Iridium personal telecommunications system. 66 satellites will be launched in 1994-6,eleven satellites in each of six orbital planes. The network will allow portable telephone calls from anywhere in the world, without recourse to the large antennae needed for current remote systems such as Inmarsat. The handsets will also be compatible with existing terrestrial cellular networks. The system is named after the 66th element of the periodic table | |
