Geostationary satellite orbit,computer artwork. A geostationary Earth orbit (GEO,white ring) is around 35,700 kilometres above the Earth. This allows the satellite to rotate with the Earth,remaining stationary above the same point on the Earth's surface. In a stable orbit the satellite is in equilibrium between the Earth's gravity (indicated by blue arrow) and the centrifugal force (indicated by green arrow) created by its velocity. Satellites that use a GEO include meteorological and television broadcasting satellites
