Hermes space shuttle. Artist's impression of Europe's Hermes space shuttle in orbit over Europe. Hermes was cancelled in 1995. It was proposed in the 1980s and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA),with most of the money coming from the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES). Hermes was designed to be launched on an expendable Ariane 5 rocket. After completing its mission, the shuttle would return to Earth to be used again. Due to budget difficulties, funding for the project was withdrawn in 1995. Illustration of the Hermes design in 1987 | |
