Artwork depicting the launch of Hermes,the European Space Agency's re-usable spaceplane,from the Kourou space centre in French Guyana. Hermes will be 15 metre long,11 metre across and will weigh 22 tonnes. It will be lifted into a low earth orbit,along with it's crew of 3 and a 3 tonne payload,by an Ariane 5 launcher (seen here beneath the triangle-shaped spaceplane). The first (unmanned) test flight is scheduled for 1998. Two Hermes are to be built; each is expected to under- go around 30 flights over a 15 year working life | |
