Mir space station. View of the Russian space station Mir in orbit. Mir was launched in February 1986. At first the space station consisted of a core module and docking facilities. Subsequent launches have added a variety of science modules, increasing the space station's mass from its original 21 tonnes to over 100 tonnes. This photo was taken during Shuttle Mission STS-71 when Shuttle Atlantis docked with Mir for a week of joint experiments. STS-71,which flew on 27 June to 7 July 1995,was the first of at least six planned US missions to the Russian space station | |
