Russian space memorabilia. The four-page telegram from First Secretary Khrushchev to Gagarin, congratulating him on making the first space flight on 12 April 1961. Part of the telegram reads "Your glorious deed...will be remembered through the ages as an example of courage, bravery and heroism....". Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin made one orbit of the Earth in his famous flight, and never went into space again. He was killed in an aircraft accident in 1968,and his ashes were interred in the wall of the Kremlin. This telegram is just one of the 200 items offered for sale at Sotheby's New York on 11 December 1993 at a special auction of Soviet space memorabilia | |
