Mars Rover model. View of engineer Howard Eisen with a model of a Mars rover designed to collect samples from the surface of Mars. This rover has several spiked wheels to enable it to travel over the rough, uneven surface of Mars. Models such as this are extensively tested on Earth in areas which have similar terrain to Mars, such as rocky deserts. Rovers will be deployed from a series of Mars Surveyor probes set to be launched in the first few years of the 21st century. The samples they obtain will then be collected by a later probe, which will return them to Earth. This Mars rover is being developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,California,USA | |
