Mars Sample Return mission. Artwork of the Mars Sample Return spacecraft blasting off from the surface of Mars. Due for launch in Summer 2005,this craft has the aim of returning Martian soil samples to Earth for detailed analysis. It is made up of two parts; a lander which provides the base, and a module which is seen returning to Earth. Robot arms are seen on either side of the lander, which collect soil samples for the mission. A rover is seen at lower right. The Sample Return mission is designed to land near and collect samples from a rover left from an earlier mission, which had collected rocks from the surface | |
