Lunar lander. Computer artwork of the future lunar lander, which will carry 4 NASA astronauts, leaving the Moon. Part of the lander is left behind. Once back in Moon orbit the lander will dock with the rest of the waiting spacecraft and then travel back to Earth. NASA's plans to send manned missions to explore the moon's surface were announced on 19 September 2005. The first mission is scheduled for 2018. The program is predicted to cost $104 billion and will build outposts that will eventually allow manned missions to Mars and beyond. The last moon landing was NASA's Apollo 17 mission in 1972 | |
