Space shuttle Discovery docked to the International Space Station, from where this photograph was taken. This was on 29th July 2005,during mission STS-114,the Return to Flight. This was the first shuttle mission since the loss of Columbia on 1st February 2003. A near-repeat of the incident that led to the Columbia disaster, insulating foam falling from the main fuel tank during launch, meant that Discovery's heat shield had to be scrutinised and repaired manually in flight. After the shuttle landed safely on 9th August, the remaining shuttle fleet was grounded until the falling foam problem could be definitively resolved | |
