ISS Quest airlock being manipulated by the robotic arm (Canadarm2) of the International Space Station (ISS). The 6-metre-long,6.5-tonne airlock was attached on 15 July 2001 to the ISS Unity module. The airlock will allow the crew to conduct space walks. Susan Helms, one of the 3-person Expedition 2 crew of the ISS,operated the robotic arm to lift the Quest airlock from the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Atlantis flew this mission (STS-104) from 12-24 July 2001. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA,the European Space Agency, the Russian space agency,Canada,Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres and is scheduled for completion in 2004 | |
