ISS treadmill. Astronaut Susan J. Helms moving a treadmill from the Space Shuttle Atlantis onto the International Space Station (ISS). This will be used by the future crews of the ISS to follow an extensive daily exercise regime. This is needed to prevent muscle atrophy and loss of bone tissue in the weightless environment of space. Mission STS-101 (19th-29th May 2000) was the third flight to continue assembling the ISS. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA,the European Space Agency,the Russian space agency,Canada,Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres and is scheduled for completion in 2004,when it will be over 100 metres in length | |
