Shuttle experiment. Astronauts on Space Shuttle Endeavour testing a water treatment system. This is intended to purify the water produced by the shuttle's fuel cells so that it is suitable for use in biotechnology experiments. This would reduce the need to ship ultra-pure water as part of the shuttle payload. The project is known as DTO (Detail Test Objective) 694. This flight (mission STS-111) is the first to carry the system. The astronauts seen are mission commander Kenneth D. Cockrell (left) and pilot Paul S. Lockhart. Photographed in June 2002 | |
