Shuttle commander Collins. Mission commander Eileen M. Collins on board space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-93. Collins was the first female mission commander of a space mission. Mission STS-93 took place between 23rd-27th July 1999. The main purpose of the mission was the deployment of the Chandra X-ray Observatory,the most powerful X-ray telescope ever built. It will study X-ray sources such as prospective black holes. Also on board Columbia were pilot Jeffrey S. Ashby and mission specialists Steven A. Hawley,Catherine G. Coleman and Michel Tognini.
