Japanese astronaut on Shuttle Mission STS-65. Dr Chiaki Mukai,representing Japan's National Space Development Agency (NASDA),seen on the aft mid- deck of Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-65. Dr Mukai,a physician,acted as payload specialist on the flight which carried the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) in its payload bay. IML-2 contained several experiments from Japanese Universities and research centres. Dr Mukai is seen here holding a cassette box containing bean sprouts,part of an experiment into how plant growth is affected by the microgravity conditions in orbit. STS-65 flew on 8-23 July 1994 | |
