Release of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) from the Space Shuttle Discovery's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) during mission STS-48. The mission started on September 12th 1991 and lasted six days. UARS represents the first stage of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth. This satellite has a variety of instruments on board which should provide a complete set of data covering the depletion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. It will be able to measure concentrations of gases responsible for ozone depletion and also to map,on a global scale, the direction of the winds that disperse chemicals and aerosols in the upper atmosphere | |
