Launch of Shuttle Endeavour,STS-54. Clouds of exhaust fumes cover the launch pad as Shuttle Endeavour leaves the ground at the start of Mission STS-54. This mission,which took place on 13-19 January 1993,had the primary task of deploying NASA's sixth Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-F). This having been successful,the satellite was re-named TDRS-6 (numbers are assigned only after a successful launch). This mission also carried the Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS) instrument,used to study X-rays from the interstellar medium.
