Astronaut Frank L Culbertson seen after leaving the hatchway of the Shuttle trainer during exercises learning the use of the escape pole,prior to Shuttle Atlantis' Mission STS-38. This special pole was designed after the January 1986 Challenger accident and allows the crew to exit the orbiter whilst inside the Earth's atmosphere. The purpose of the pole is to ensure that the crew member is carried clear of the wings and tail fin after exit. Mission STS-38 was launched on 15th November 1990 carrying a payload for the US Department of Defense. The crew returned safely on 20th November 1990 | |
