Astronaut Carl J Meade prepares to undergo training in contingency Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) at the Johnson Space Center,Florida,in April 1990 prior to Shuttle Mission STS-38. Standing on a moveable platform,the astronaut is lowered into a 25-foot deep pool of water to simulate conditions experienced during Shuttle EVA's. This pool is part of the Johnson Weightless Environment Training Center. Mission STS-38 was launched on Shuttle Atlantis on 15th November 1990 carrying a US Department of Defense payload.
