Lunar arrival: Astronaut Shepard shields his eyes from the intense sunlight,shortly after taking his first steps on the Moon's surface during the Apollo 14 mission. Apollo 14 arrived on the Moon on 5 February 1971. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell stayed on the Moon for 33 hours 31 minutes,performing two excursions on the surface totalling 9 hours 23 minutes.
