Surveyor 3 landed on the Moon in Oceanus Procellarum on 17 April 1967. It made various excavation and bearing tests on the lunar surface as part of the planning for the Apollo series. Apollo 12 landed 160 metres from Surveyor 3 on 19 November 1969. Conrad visited Surveyor 3 to remove its TV camera and other components for return to Earth.
