Apollo 11 launch (first of 2 images). Apollo 11 climbs towards orbit after lift-off during the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first stage of the spacecraft's Saturn V rocket has five engines capable of delivering 3.5 million kilogrammes of thrust. This first stage burnt for 2.5 minutes, lifting the spacecraft to an altitude of 60 kilometres and a distance downrange from the launch site of 88 km. This stage then separated, allowing two other rocket stages to continue the journey. Astronauts Neil Armstrong,Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin were launched in Apollo 11 on 16 July 1969. Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969. (See also S375/0068) | |
