Apollo command module. Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) seen orbiting above the Moon during the Apollo 10 mission. This mission was a rehearsal for placing the first man on the Moon. During this mission,(18-26 May 1969),the CSM made 31 orbits of the Moon and deployed the Lunar Module (LM). The LM was piloted by astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan to within 14 kilometres of the Moon's surface whilst astronaut John Young stayed in the CSM. After docking,Cernan & Stafford transferred back to the CSM. The LM was jettisoned before the CSM successfully returned to Earth. Photographed on the far side of the Moon from Earth | |
