Ariane 4 launch at night. An Ariane 44LP rocket lifting off from the ESA's Kourou launch site in the early hours of 17 May 1995. The payload for this launch was an Intelsat 7 communications satellite. The 44LP is a variant of the Ariane 4 launcher. The 4LP suffix denotes four strap-on boosters; two solid propellant (P) and two liquid (L). The first stage and the liquid boosters use the same fuels; a propellant called UH25 and dinitrogen tetroxide as an oxidiser. Excess oxidant is seen as the orange fumes at left | |
