Structure of the Universe. Third of 3 images from a computer model showing how matter might have clumped together in the early Universe. The image shows a region 30 million light years across at a time when the Universe was 35% of its present age. Filamentary regions where matter is denser have developed under the action of gravity; they will form the galaxies and clusters of galaxies that we see in the sky. The model assumes that most of the matter in the Universe is in the form of cold dark matter (CDM) made up of exotic particles such as photinos and axions. Compare with SPL pictures R980/038 and R980/039 which show the same region of the Universe at 5% and 9% of its present age | |
