False colour X-ray image of quasar 3C 273 and its jet, recorded by the Eistein Observatory satellite. 3C 273 was the first quasar to be identified and is the closest to Earth at a distance of 2100 million light years. The quasar is a powerful emitter of radiation at all wavelengths. It emits over a million times more X-rays than our Milky Way galaxy. In this image,X-ray brightness is coded according to intensity, with the most intense areas in white and red. The red spot at lower right is the jet . The spokes around the quasar are due to the imaging system | |
