Hubble Space Telescope's 100,000th image. Hubble Space Telescope image showing a quasar,a new galaxy and foreground objects. The quasar is at centre, and is about 9 billion light years from Earth. The faint blob just above this is a previously-unknown elliptical galaxy, some 7 billion years from Earth. The galaxy in upper centre is much closer, and the bright foreground star to the left of centre is in our own galaxy. This was the 100,000th image made using the Hubble Space Telescope. This milestone was passed on 22 June 1996 in the telescope's sixth year of operation | |
