Galaxy cluster Abell 1185,optical image. Galaxies are groups of stars gravitationally bound together and form many different shapes and sizes. Galaxies are also bound together by gravity and form clusters. Galaxy cluster Abell 1185 contains some 52 galaxies and is around 500 million light years distant. Two of the galaxies have collided to form Arp 105 (lower right),also called The Guitar. The tidal effects of the galactic collision resulted in the thin line of stars (the guitar handle) that were dragged out of their parent galaxies. Abell 1185 is in the constellation Ursa Major | |
