The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51,NGC 5194) as seen at infrared wavelengths (15 microns) by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) satellite. The nucleus of this spiral galaxy is seen at centre. The bright (white-orange) spots seen in the spiral arms of the galaxy are associated with warm dust clouds where stellar formation is taking place. The bright object at top right is NGC 5195,a satellite galaxy of M51 | |
