Optical image of the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070),also known as 30 Doradus, which is situated at about 160,000 light years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Tarantula nebula is an enormous region where stellar formation takes place and clouds of hydrogen are ionised and lit up by hot, newborn stars. A similar object in our galaxy is the Orion nebula but NGC 2070 is much bigger. If the Tarantula nebula was located where the Orion nebula is,it would occupy half the sky and turn night into day | |
