Optical image of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC),an irregular satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. It lies about 200,000 light years away in the constellation of Tucana. It contains many pink & red areas. Most of the ones towards top left are nebulae, clouds of gas & dust lit up by hot young stars; those towards bottom right tend to be globular star clusters. The SMC forms an interacting pair with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The photograph was taken with the 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia | |
