Active galaxies. X-ray-emitting galaxies in the Lockman Hole region of Ursa Major. The energy of emitted X-rays is colour-coded: 0.5-2 kilo- electronvolts (keV,red),2-4.5 keV (green) and 4.5-10 keV (blue). The image identifies a significant number of previously undetected high energy X-ray sources (green, blue) thought to be quasars and large Seyfert galaxies, both of which contain massive black holes. It comprises data captured by three EPIC X-ray telescopes aboard the XMM-Newton satellite, launched in 1999 | |
