Perseus A galaxy. Coloured X-ray image of the supergiant elliptical galaxy Perseus A,or NGC 1275. Colours here represent X-ray energy, from red (lowest) through green to blue (highest). Two dark cavities are thought to be buoyant magnetised bubbles of particles produced by energy released from the galaxy's central black hole. The darker blue patch just right of centre represents X-ray absorption by a smaller galaxy being drawn in toward Perseus A. This image was made using the Chandra X-ray Observatory in Earth orbit | |
