Fornax A galaxy. Optical image of the radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) with the smaller galaxy NGC 1317 above it. North is at top. Fornax A is a powerful source of radio waves which extends far beyond the visible confines of the galaxy. These galaxies are members of the Fornax cluster,a gravitationally linked group of 18 galaxies which lies around 70 million light years from Earth in the constellation Fornax. The radio emission of Fornax A is powered by a massive black hole at the galaxy's centre. There is evidence that Fornax A has engulfed smaller members of the cluster in the past, and material from these galaxies falling onto the black hole powers the radio emission | |
