The Tadpole colliding galaxies, optical image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope's new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on April 1st & 9th 2002. The unusual shape of the large spiral galaxy (UGC 10214) was caused by a collision with a smaller galaxy (seen through the large galaxy in its upper left part). The gravitational forces during this collision led to the formation of a long tail (to lower right) and several huge star clusters (blue). The galaxies will combine to form a large elliptical galaxy in several million years time. The Tadpole galaxies are around 420 million light years from Earth in the constellation Draco | |
