Sculptor galaxy (NGC 253). This galaxy, also known as the Silver Coin galaxy, lies around 11 million light years from Earth in the constellation Sculptor. It is part of the Sculptor (or South Polar) Group of galaxies, one of the closest galaxy groups to the Local Group that contains our Milky Way. NGC 253 is a barred spiral galaxy seen on an oblique angle from Earth. Its barred spiral shape is better seen in infrared than visible light (in which this image was taken),as infrared radiation penetrates the large amounts of dust in the spiral arms | |
